Clermont County Ohio Families

Clermont County, Ohio, is located just east of Cincinnati in the southwestern part of the state. (Cincinnati is where my wife Sylvia'a family settled after immigrating from Italy via NYC.) The county was established in 1800 and named after Clermont, the French name for a region in central France. Clermont County has a rich history that spans over 200 years. In the early 19th century, the county was a center of agriculture and commerce, with bustling river ports and roads connecting it to other parts of Ohio and the country. During this time, the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses (which my ancestors lived in) used by enslaved African Americans to escape to freedom, was active in Clermont County. The Civil War had a significant impact on the county, with many residents serving in Union forces and several battles fought in the area. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the county saw growth in industry, including the manufacture of textiles and furniture, and the establishment of a thriving wine industry.

In the 20th century, Clermont County continued to grow and develop, with new businesses, schools, and communities being established. Today, the county is known for its scenic rolling hills, historic sites, and recreational opportunities, including parks and waterways, and is a popular destination for tourists and residents alike.

When I first started looking for my WOOD ancestors I started in in Bethel.in Clermont Co. Ohio because I recalled that as a kid with my parents I had visited my great uncle Carl Wood who lived there. Back then, there was no Ancestry.com, so I joined the Genealogy forum on CompuServe. There I met a researcher named Phyllis Gillaspie. It turned out that Phyllis' MANNING family and my WOOD family had lived together in Pennsylvania, intermarried and founded the Manning Station (or Wood-Manning) in Clermont Co. Ohio around 1800 to trade and provide protection from Indian attacks. It was reported that Daniel Boone was a visitor at the station. These families eventually spread westward to Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and other states.

Phyllis has since passed but in 1997 she provided me with 159 pages of family group sheets (FGSs) from her genealogy research for MANNING and WOOD pioneer families including their descendants and a few neighbors. Some of this data has already been incorporated into my database on this website. Unfortunately, there was too much data in these FGSs for me to enter, especially since many of these families were unrelated to me.

After several years of trying, I have finally been able to reliably scan and perform optical character recognition (OCR) on these records and I have saved them in a searchable PDF format. While I cannot guarantee the accuracy of the OCR, I tried to review them closely. I have seen a few dates that did not make sense and I have checked those against the original forms. (There are several entries where the year is shown as "0194" and that is what is on the FGS.) I also have seen more than one entry where the date was 19xx but should be 18xx. These are also faithful to the paper copies. If you see a date that does not fit and you wish to verify it, feel free to contact me.

Note that while this material is searchable, I recommend that you download the PDF file in order to search it since searching it in Google may not return complete results.

I also cannot verify the accuracy of the information contained in the FGSs because I did not compile the information myself and I know there are errors. There are numerous footnotes and while I trust Phyllis' research, as always you should verify and document any information new to you for yourself.

I have attempted to remove pages that contain information on persons born in 1940 or later under the assumption they could still be alive. (Data from 1940 is already be available on censuses and many other records.) If you see a surname below and cannot locate that name on a page it could be because I removed that page. Feel free to contact me for more information if necessary or to report any errors.

For the present, I have placed these family group sheets in a single large PDF that can be downloaded and then printed or searched. All I ask is that if you use the information, please both verify it and give this website credit to the source so that others can find it.

If anyone has access to Phyllis' original data or her GEDCOM file I would love to receive a copy so all of her data could be provided on this website.
