Obituary of Carole Smith
April 25, 1922 – December 24, 2016
Carole F. Smith, “Mutti”, passed away Christmas Eve, December 24th, 2016 surrounded by her family. She was ninety-four years old. Carole was born April 25, 1922 in Greenville, SC to the late Harriet and Edward Fluker. She was a graduate of St. Petersburg Florida High School, class of 1938, and she attended St. Pete Business College.

Carole met her husband, Lyman B. Smith, who was stationed in St. Pete with the Air Force. After World War II was over, she and her family moved to Chattanooga.

Carole began to write music for Capital Records as a contract writer for five years where she met Sonny James and wrote lyrics and music with him for over twenty-five years. She had over two hundred songs recorded with five number one hit singles. She had recordings by many outstanding artists including The Oak Ridge Boys, George Jones, Andy Williams, Pat Boone, Marie Osmond, The Jordanaires (who were the back-up for Elvis Presley). Kelly Clarkson sang one of her songs for President Obama at his Christmas Dinner. One of the highlights of her career was having three songs on the Disc Jockey Dick Clark Show in one day.

Carole loved real-estate and was involved in buying older homes, remodeling, and selling them, which she did in Florida, Alabama, and Tennessee. She and her husband along with son Robert and daughter Katie started Ooltewah Specialty Packaging Company to manufacture corrugated boxes. They kept Ooltewah Specialty for eighteen years and sold it to Georgia Pacific Container Company in 1989. Carole was a charter member of Bayside Baptist Church where she served as a member of the choir and for many years wrote the Christmas Pageant with Mark Blair. She was a member of the Emmanuel Small Group Class.

Carole was preceded in death by her sons Lyman James “Jimmy” Smith and Dr. David C. Smith along with David’s wife, Valerie Smith; a brother Ed Fluker.

Carole is survived by her husband, Lyman B. Smith; son Robert Smith and wife Karen; her daughter Katie Steffner and husband Skip. She also has many grandchildren and great-grand children: Sean and Brenda Smith and their son Adrian Marc; Aren Smith and his daughter Maya; Mac and Vicki Buggle and their sons Logan and Brody; Jes and Ashley Steffner and their children Caitlynn, Beau, and Grayson; Billy and Starr Wilson and their children Brittany, Trip, James, and Lucas; Steve Steffner; Mason Lyman and Lauren Smith and their son Beckett; Matt and Cameron Moreland and their children David, Ella Kate, and Sean; Jarett and Mary Carole Hall and their children Mathias and Valerie; a brother David Fluker and his wife Bobbie and family; and brother Ed Fluker’s wife Dee and family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bayside Baptist Church Building Fund: 6100 Highway 58 North, Harrison, TN 37341.

The family will receive friends from 4pm to 7pm at Bayside Baptist Church on Tuesday, December 27th. Celebration of Life Service will be held at Bayside Baptist Church at 6:30pm on Wednesday, December 28th with Sr. Pastor Eric Stitts officiating. Graveside will be held at a later date at the Chattanooga National Cemetery for family.

Obituary of ALLENDALE, S.C. - William Edward Mixson, 87, husband of the late Marlene Hart Mixson, of Allendale, died Thursday, March 29, 2012. Mr. Mixson was a native of Allendale and a son of the late Mack C. and Nonie Dowling Mixson. Edward was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy in both the Pacific and European theaters. He was a 1949 graduate of Wofford College, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order. Edward retired from the OCAB Community Action Agency. He was the proprietor of a number of businesses in Allendale, including Mixson's Dry Goods, the Carolina Diner, and the Village Inn Restaurant. Additionally, he served as the Magistrate of Allendale from 1958-1962, as well as the SC House of Representatives during the mid 1960's, where he was elected Reading Clerk. He was a devoted family man, a consummate gentleman, an avid Gamecock, and loved a good laugh. Graveside Services will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday, April 1, 2012 at Swallow Savannah Cemetery, Allendale. The family will host a reception immediately following at the Jackson House 517 East Bay St., Allendale. Edward is survived by his daughters, Susan Mixson Cleveland and Helen Hart Engel (Ron); his son, Billy Mixson; his granddaughter, Alex Guidry; his grandsons, Joey Mixson (Kelly) and Hart Cleveland; his great-granddaughter, Arianna Howell. In addition to his family, he cherished his employees at the Village Inn who helped him create thousands of satisfied diners over the years.      Obituary of Richard Mixson Sr.

ALLENDALE - Richard Hamilton Mixson Sr., 78, of Allendale, died Tuesday, March 14, 2006, in Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Family will accept visitors at Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home Wednesday, March 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fairfax, S.C. Graveside services will follow in Swallow Savannah Cemetery in Allendale. Richard was born October 4, 1927, in Allendale. He was a son of the late Nonnie Dowling Mixson and Mack Mixson. Richard was a graduate of The Citadel Military Academy and served in the United States Army. He was owner of Mixson Oil Company and served in the community throughout his life. Richard served as the Mayor of Allendale from 1960 to 1966, served on the Allendale Town Council, was a member of Allendale Lions Club and served on the Allendale County Hospital Board for 22 years. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served on the church Council.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mrs. Christina Mixson; 3 sons, Richard Mixson Jr. of Brunson, Robert Mixson of Allendale and David Mixson of Beaufort; brother, Edward Mixson of Bluffton; sister, Helen Swofford of Chattanooga, Tennessee; three grandsons and one granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of S.C., 2999 Sunset Blvd., Columbia, SC 29169 or to Trinity Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 1111, Fairfax, SC 29827.

Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home of Allendale is in charge of arrangements.
